We departed Mackay Marina early on a Monday morning with The Gun and The Lonewolf II in tow heading straight to one of my favourite areas on the Hardline, well known as Turrum Bend.
After our 10-hour steam we pulled into our lovely anchorage in the Duck Pond to get a good night’s rest, before our first of many great days of fishing. Just like on every fishing trip with your mates, there was plenty of friendly banter to kick-start our trip.
We kicked off with a few great days of bottom bashing in the shallows and it certainly did not disappoint with good numbers of Red Throat and Trout coming over the sides. On Day 4 we decided to head off the shelf to do some exploring; navigating through the awesome reef channels out into the deep really is something else.
The amount of water pushing through these channels on a daily basis just blows you away. After having a good look around, we found some exciting-looking bottom around the 60m mark.
We pulled up for a drift and sure enough, the guys hooked up straight away to only get a few pumps off the bottom before getting done by sharks. After a few more failed attempts we decided to go chase some surface fish. We managed to hook a big Yellowfin Tuna and followed up with a dancing Mahi Mahi.
On Day 5 we decided to head further north up to the world famous Bugatti reef. As the freezer was quite full of reef fish we decided to target the deep over the next couple of days. The tides were building so our fishing windows got smaller in the deep as the days went on. But the guys didn’t need a lot of time to land some monster Red Emperor and Nannygai.
All around it was a great trip with plenty of quality fish being caught over the 10 days. As for the weather, well we couldn’t have asked for it to be any better.
Enjoy our pics.
